"Rock the Lock" was a passion project I lead in which I was re-invisioning the lock screen on Android devices and what a carrier could bring to the table and possibly enhance their customers' experiences.

One successful concept that tested well with customers was a concept for returning a lost device. A customer would go online, call customer care, or visit a store to report the device as lost. This would trigger an automatic lock of the device so that whoever finds it could not access the customers device except to see options on how to return the phone to them.

The finder of the phone would attempt to unlock the device and be prompted with a way to contact the owner of the device, return it to a nearby store, or be shipped a box to their location of choice, free of charge. The finder may also receive some incentive from T-Mobile.

Everyone wins in this scenario where the finder is rewarded, the original owner gets their device back, and T-Mobile reduces churn by mediating the reuniting. T-Mobile liked my idea enough that a patent has been filed protecting this process flow and user experience.

Many of my other concepts have now been realized in one form or another through other apps or revisions to the Android OS. All of my concepts however predated these.

Patents can be found here and here.

Project Rubik (Kinetic UI) explored the intersection of the mobile GUI and new physical input methods. The project lead to a series of experiments that looked to answer: "What comes after multi-touch?"

"Slate" was the name of a dual touch-screen device that would run and take advantage of an OS such as "Flow".

The concept of flow was developed by my colleagues and I for the Rubik project and were inspired by some prior iterations from another project where I explored a rolladex-style contact card UI. Definitely not a new idea there, but expanding that across an OS to show content in new ways and allow a user to dive in and out easier to their content was a very important step forward.

Exploratory concept sketches for a mobile suite of apps and experiences for venues inspired by a modern connected Opera House. This was a fast exploration for a 3-hour design challenge to engage a new audience of opera-goers with near-term solutions for a better engaging experience.

I designed a 2-phased vision for both a near-term and short-term suite of solutions. Heavy emphasis is placed on a technology partner who's existing and nascent products would be leveraged—such as Google.</description>

Bobsled consists of an ecosystem of integrated calling, messaging, and contact management services that you can take with you around the web or on your mobile devices.

What does that mean for the user? The current suite allows a user to take their Facebook friends list with them, chat with them, or call them while visiting ANY webspage without having to go back to a facebook page. Any tab in any browser, the web extension lets users call and message their friends.

The mobile apps due shortly will round out the suite by allowing users to communicate wherever they are across communities, and not rely on multiple apps, social networks, and figuring out the current presence of their intended friend they want to contact.

The full suite of applications are available on bobsled.com.

PRESTA is an innovative new illumination and interaction paradigm for smart phones that allows users to monitor incoming voicemail, text, emails, news, and social media feeds through image and text projection onto the surrounding table top surface.

Users can interact with projected user interface to take calls when hands are dirty, scroll through various messages, or operate common software through extended controls such as a music player.

A projected interactive system also enables users to enhance their experience with downloaded apps and provides developers a new medium to design for.

Project Rubik (Kinetic UI) explored the intersection of the mobile GUI and new physical input methods. The project lead to a series of experiments that looked to answer: "What comes after multi-touch?"

During a brainstorming session in which concentric Saturn-like rings were conceived for the GUI, I came up with the concept of a touch-enabled depression on the back of the device to initiate and control the on-screen interface. This later evolved into having a touchpad with stratified rings that were each touch-sensitive and enabled a different interaction in context with the task at hand. This allowed for interactions not restricted to just one app, but across the OS. The stratified edges are also touch-sensitive and have the potential to be incorporated into new interactions &#38; experiences such as navigating, gaming, or even reading.

This concept has a few implications for single-handed use cases. For one, it means that you can interact with whatever is on your phone's screen without obscuring the view of it with a finger or hand like every single touch-screen phone today requires. Second, imagine if you had limited use of a second hand from an injury or disability? Third, it could me more finite control over a small detailed interaction such as exact scrolling or selecting text for copy and paste functions for example—no more obscuring what it is you're trying to select.

A patent has been issued for the design.
